Training Your Child Part 2 - The Coffeeshop

Image
While I'm waiting for Vicki to complete the questionnaire from the viewpoint of a careers' advisor, I decided to take my 9th grader to coffee and talk about his future as Part 2 of my exploration of careers for my teens. You may recall in Part 1, my eldest who's in 11th grade was inspired by a book to decide her career with no further discussion. The last time I had a chat with "Killer", my number 2, he said he was thinking of going into animation for NASA. That was in 2015 as we hiked for 10 miles for my Moon Walk training. London Moon Walk: with Kim and Jenny I thought it was time - now that he's 14 - to re-visit the topic, and it's interesting how differently the discussion went this time around. Killer has done a lot of growing up in the past two years. He has been accepted onto the youth group's leadership training course and completed its first year of it; he volunteers weekly for the library, trains in our swim club's highest squad, and rece...

Emotional awareness & Expressions at schools 3

The onset of teenage must be welcomed as a wonderful developmental stage. The children begin to feel and think more than as children. Nevertheless it may be a confusing stage for the thirteen year olds because they perceive themselves as matured children while the elders at home and teachers at school treat them as young lot of the high school graders. Ponder over the following point. As fifth graders the children are placed at the highest class of primary section in assembly or delegation of responsibility as leaders of primary section.   After they are promoted they are positioned as the youngest of the high school. It is not unusual to find 6 th or 7 th graders as the noisy and unsettled classes. As they are adapting through their unsettlement they reach a stage of maturity. The teenage then starts after adapting. Then comes the puberty that makes them feel matured as well as confused. Therefore the elders must have a good understanding and awareness about the manifestations of...

Planning for 2017 - Step One

I'm cutting it really, really fine. We're less than a month before we're going to start school, and I haven't really made my plans for the year. Looking for inspiration in the stars I thought it might be fun - perhaps instructional - for other homeschoolers to watch me fumble through my plan for 2017-2018. As you may have gathered if you've followed me for any time, I have four children aged between 10 and 17, and I teach them all together using the Charlotte Mason method. aka Killer, Rocky, Phoenix, and Timmy There are shades of interpretation for the CM method, and while there are a lot of purists out there, I'm not one of them. To my mind, Charlotte Mason - genius as she was - was still a classroom teacher and planned, implemented, and managed her philosophy via the lens of being a classroom teacher. I know ... sacrilege, right? Well, I'm a former classroom teacher, too, and know for a fact that what one does in a classroom is not what one necessarily nee...

Emotional awareness & Expressions at schools -2

Emotional Awareness and Expressions  from  6 yrs to 12 yrs Children in this age group are more assertive and bonded with their possessions. Specially with their belongings such as food and books etc.At schools if we find any child being very careful about their note books and objects it is a clear expression of emotional bonding with their belongings. Their expressions of fear, bewilderment and sorrow if they lose or forget something are clear indications of emotional expression. When we see things thrown around it is essential to develop that sense of belonging. Children at this age also try to fight to show assertive behavior. The awareness of emotion will help the situation to be understood and to handle. It is best to separate the behavior from the children and involve them into it as a story. Stories are liked by all children. At the young age children are capable of correcting themselves as the characters of the stories.Th...

Emotional awareness & Expressions at schools-1

Schools have children ranging from 3+ yrs to 15+ yrs, i.e. from toddlers to teenagers. Let us discuss the emotional issues by various age groups.            Emotional Awareness and Expressions at 5 yrs and  below     Here we are talking about awareness of elders about the emotional issues in children and their expressions of feelings . Kids have their own feelings and emotions. As care takers elders must have the knowledge about the expressions of children which are on the basis of their emotions. For example the emotional need of a preschooler  is a secured feeling with  self confidence. A child who is consistently corrected at home or spanked with impatience is less likely to be confident at school. Where as a child who is praised well with encouraging words for attempting an action develops confidence. Parents must remember  how they felt when the little child started muttering and blabbering...

Training Your Child for their Career

As my eldest is getting near the end of her homeschooling journey, Im turning attention more and more toward supporting her to become who she is meant to be. As teens, they are starting to spread their wings Back in March of 2016, I wrote a blog post that sort of touched on this (see http://boyschooling.blogspot.com/2016/03/the-best-job-in-world.html ).   What I didnt make clear is that these thoughts had started out from a place of fear - fear that cookie-cutter education was going to try to shape her into something she wasnt created for. Id seen glimpses of it already at nursery, where her personality was clashing with the way things are done, and the pressure to conform ones behaviour to make the least possible waves was being frequently impressed upon her and the other children in her class. So, like I said in the earlier blog post, sometimes we may begin down a path because were running away from something, only to discover that its actually the better journey. In thi...

BUDDE: an acronym for controlling anger overload

In my clinical work, I have started using an acronym to help clients remember some of the strategies from the parent's manual and from the children's workbook.  Each letter in BUDDE stands for an important part of how you can develop self control.  Work on the strategies below while you are calm, so you develop a plan.  Remember the plan will not work all the time, but the more you practice it, the more you will be able to have self control. The B stands for the brain.  First it is important to understand that anger emanates from the brain, and that one's brain can change with repeated practice. The U stands for understanding one's triggers.  Be sure to think about what was going on before you got enraged.  Try to identify two or three different triggers.  My anger overload workbook gives suggestions to help you come up with your triggers. The first D stands for deep breaths.  When you notice a trigger happening, or notice yourself getting frustra...

What we need is a powerful action! A roar and not a cry in the wilderness! Every human cares for reputation. If a human is developed at a personal ,family and social level let  all the responsible social agents stand for it ! Thus the educational institutions must take up the responsibility  of developing children into strong personalities. The governments central as well as state must give a strong hand to all the human rights associations and authorities of law and order. Let the social media very regularly broadcast socially relevant ,important and essential programs at a proper time to reach maximum citizens. Thus all the responsible organizations which include 1.at the social level ( schools, media,NGOs and authors and psychologists )2. Community level  (the community leaders at the devotional places, rituals such as marriages )3. Government level (policy and implementations) 4. Social authorities such as police and law, must act effectively to protect the com...
